Gabriel Gasparinatos is a Sydney based filmmaker. His debut feature documentary ONEFOUR: AGAINST ALL ODDS was released in October 2023 on Netflix and premiered at SXSW Sydney. The film is a global Netflix Original commission co-produced by Jennifer Peedom for Stranger Than Fiction & Entropico. The documentary tells the story of the popular Australian drill rap group ONEFOUR and their ongoing conflict with the NSW Police, who prevent them from performing shows in their hometown. Critic Margaret Pomeranz described it as “an incendiary and powerful film that provokes both outrage and compassion. A cautionary tale for those of us opposed to censorship and discriminatory police powers.”. For his work on the film Gabriel was nominated for Best Direction in a Debut Feature at the 2023 Australian Directors Guild Awards.
Gabriel’s other work includes directing commercial and music projects for Beats By Dre, Adidas, Google, Julia Stone, ONEFOUR, Baker Boy and many more. He’s been nominated for two ARIA Awards (2019 and 2020), Best Emerging Director at the 2023 Award Awards and won one 2023 Cannes Bronze Lion.
Gabriel is drawn to telling stories which have a social or political agenda and highlight the experiences of underrepresented groups in society, he is currently developing a slate of narrative and documentary projects in this space.
Beyond directing, Gabriel annually guest lectures at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and actively mentors emerging Western Sydney film creatives through programs with Apple, Street University and Music NSW.
