Alex Cardy’s work traverses drama, documentary and moving-image installation. Her recent long form projects include Roadshow’s drama series YEAR OF (Stan), Sue Maslin’s THE PALACE LETTERS (ABC) & Matthew Bate’s THE DEFENDERS (Amazon), winner of the Audience Award at SIFF 2023.
With a passion for hybrid and instinctual filmmaking, she worked on ZEF (dir. Jessica Lawton) which won her a Gold ACS. In the same year she won the Bronze ACS for her collaboration with iconic artist Patricia Piccinini, WE TRAVEL TOGETHER, the centerpiece of Rising Festival 2022.
Her early work as 2nd Unit DOP for cinematographer Ari Wegner on feature drama RUIN (winner Venice Orizzonti) led her to seek out collaborations with directors interested in intimate and visually bold drama. Many of her short films have been selected at top-tier festivals such as Toronto and Edinburgh; including WE’RE NOT HERE (dir. Bonnie Moir, Best Cinematography at RGFF 2021), YOU AND ME, BEFORE AND AFTER (dir. Madeleine Gottlieb) and MULTIPLY (dir. Rhys Graham) which also won her a Gold ACS award.
She is attached to feature films THE TIDES for Rhys Graham and Harvey Zielinski’s forthcoming feature SWEET MILK LAKE amongst other projects. Alex is also one of the founders of Sissy Screens, an organisation and publication championing queer screen culture.
