Matthew is a theatre and opera director who is currently an Associate Artist of the Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne. Prior to this, from 2004 to 2011 Matthew was the Founder and Artistic Director of ThinIce, a production company based in Perth. In 2006 he was Black Swan Theatre Company’s Associate Director and from 2003 to 2006 was the Artistic Director of their BSX-Theatre program.

Prior to this, he directed WOYZECK, THE VISIT, MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE andSTRIPTEASE for BSX-Theatre, and THE GOOSE CHASE, THE GATHERING, BED, THE BALD PRIMA DONNA for ThinIce.
Matthew received awards for Best Production at the Perth International Fringe Festival 2003 for THE BALD PRIMA DONNA and Best Production at the 2005 Equity Guild Awards for THE VISIT. He has also been awarded a Young People and the Arts Fellowship from ArtsWA (2007), the Young West Australian of the Year for Arts in 2005 and the WA Citizen of the year award – Youth Arts Award 2010.
Matthew was a member of the Theatre Panel for the Australia Council for the Arts from 2008 to 2011.
In 2012, Matthew directs ON THE MISCONCEPTION OF OEDIPUS and Declan Greene’s POMPEII, LA for the Malthouse Theatre.
