Jessie Oldfield and Adam Murfet are an award winning directing duo. Their unique voice spans narrative television, short films and commercials. Jessie and Adam began their career making art-house fashion films, which quickly captured the attention of the commercial world, and soon had them working all over the country for major brands including Renault, Adidas, Country Road, Target and Myer, amongst many more. Harnessing their signature bold visual style and wit, the pair has now transposed their distinct tone to long form narrative work.
Their first foray into narrative television was the half hour comedy series WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS, which was originally conceived through Jessie & Adam’s production company (Certain Kind of Light) as part of the ABC’s Fresh Blood Pilot Season initiative in 2019. In 2021 the duo went on to produce and direct the six part series for the ABC, with the series subsequently being picked up internationally by Netflix. Continuing their journey into narrative television in 2021 the pair directed a block on Fremantle Media and Netflix Australia’s reboot of HEARTBREAK HIGH, which was released in 2022 to international acclaim and won the 2023 International Emmy for Kids: Live Action . In 2022 they directed a block of the young adult series TURN UP THE VOLUME for Matchbox and the ABC, due for release in 2023.
Jessie and Adam have received many industry accolades including Best Direction in a TV Commercial at the Australian Directors’ Guild Awards, Best Australian Fashion Film at the Australian Fashion Film Awards and most recently were nominated for Best Direction of a TV Comedy at the Australian Directors Guild Awards for their work on WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS. In addition to being partners in filmmaking, they are also married and share a deep knowing and shorthand between them that elevates their work beyond any ordinary creative partnership. Their work seeks to find the beauty and truth in every moment.
