Hannah Goodwin

Theatre Director

Hannah Goodwin is a director and dramaturg who lives and works on Gadigal land. She is known for premiering and championing new works, and for her bold reimagining of existing plays.

Hannah is currently the Resident Director at Belvoir St Theatre, during which time she has directed multiple mainstage shows. Notably, her world-premiere production of NEVER CLOSER was the first independent production to transfer from the Belvoir Downstairs Theatre to the Upstairs Theatre in over 15 years. NEVER CLOSER was subsequently included in The Guardian’s ‘Australia on stage: the best theatre, musicals, dance and opera of 2024’.

Hannah’s productions are detailed and dynamic, global in focus and humanist in spirit. Her work is characterised by disarmingly authentic performances with cohesive ensembles. Her productions of THE ALMIGHTY SOMETIMES (Melbourne Theatre Company) and THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (Belvoir) were nominated for Best Production in the TimeOut Arts & Culture Awards and the Sydney Theatre Awards, respectively.

Other highlights of her work include: THE WRONG GODS by S. Shakthidharan (co-dir. S. Shakthidharan, Belvoir & Melbourne Theatre Company), A VERY EXPENSIVE POISON by Lucy Prebble (NIDA), BLESSED UNION by Maeve Marsden (Belvoir & Sydney WorldPride), WAYSIDE BRIDE by Alana Valentine (co-dir. Eamon Flack, Belvoir) LIGHT SHINING IN BUCKINHAMSHIRE by Caryl Churchill (co-dir. Eamon Flack, Belvoir), THE SORRY MUM PROJECT by Pippa Ellams (National Theatre of Parramatta, Bondi Feast).

Hannah was awarded the Andrew Cameron Fellowship at Belvoir from 2020 – 2022, and the ATYP Rose Byrne Leadership Scholarship in 2019 where she undertook a research project investigating best practice processes to develop new plays and adaptations.
