Andrew is an internationally recognised writer for the stage and screen.
His most recent work for the stage is the acclaimed adaption of the Kate Grenville novel THE SECRET RIVER which was commissioned and produced by the Sydney Theatre Company and premiered at the 2013 Sydney Festival under the direction of Neil Armfield. The production won six Helpmann Awards including Best New Work and Best Play, Best New Work at the Sydney Theatre Awards, the AWGIE Award for Stage writing, and the David Williamson Prize and was joint winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award.
His play WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING, premiered at the 2008 Adelaide Festival of the Arts. The production transferred to the Sydney Theatre Company (2009), the Melbourne Theatre Company (2009) and toured nationally to Brisbane, Canberra and Alice Springs (2010). Black Swan Theatre presented a new production in Perth in 2011. The play has been produced in London at the Almeida Theatre (2009) and in New York at The Lincoln Centre (2010) where it won five Lucille Lortell Awards and was named best new play of the year by Time Magazine. It has subsequently been produced throughout America and Europe.
Earlier works for the stage include the award winning HOLY DAY, WHO’S AFRAID OF THE WORKING CLASS?, SPEAKING IN TONGUES, SCENES FROM A SEPARATION, SHIP OF FOOLS and AFTER DINNER. The Sydney Theatre Company recently revived his first play, AFTER DINNER, for a sell out season at the Wharf Theatre in Sydney in 2015.
His most recent film, A MOST WANTED MAN is an adaptation of the John Le Carre’ novel for director Anton Corbijn with Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Defoe and Robyn Wright. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was released internationally in July 2014.
Other films include EDGE OF DARKNESS (2010, staring Mel Gibson), BLESSED(2009, Winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival),LANTANA (2001, based on his play Speaking in Tongues. Winner of the Best Screenplay at the Australian Film Institute Awards, Australian Critics Circle, Australian Writers Guild, London Film Festival, Durban International Film Festival). HEAD ON(1998, Winner Best Screenplay Australian Writers Guild Awards), THE FISHERMAN’S WAKE (1996. Dir. Neil Armfield) and the original screenplay forSTRICTLY BALLROOM (1992. Dir. Baz Lurhmann).
