Mararo Wangai is a writer, actor and artist.
Mararo’s work explores the diasporic experience, intergenerationlism and cross-cultural collisions. In his creative process, Mararo strives to remain adaptive, organic and alive from development, through to the eventual encounter with an audience.
Mararo’s stage plays include SUDDEN SKIES (2018); BLACK BRASS (2021) which had a Perth Festival season and toured to Belvoir in 2022 and Western Australian regions in 2023; and ALWAYS ACCRA which was long listed for the 2025 Griffin Playwright Award. BLACK BRASS was nominated for Best Mainstage Production at the 2022 Performing Arts WA Awards.
Mararo has written a number of short films including MZUNGUKO (2024) which will screen at the 2025 African Australian Film Festival; and FRANCO’S HEARTS (2025). Mararo is currently developing the feature film version of BLACK BRASS with Djali House Productions.
In 2015 Mararo was the winner of the Emerging Writer’s Award for Black Swan Theatre and in 2017 he was shortlisted for the Patrick Award at Sydney Theatre Company. In 2023 Mararo went on to be awarded the prestigious Arts Award at the Western Australian Multicultural Awards for his work in championing diversity in the arts. In 2024 he was short-listed for Black Swan Theatre Piggy Back Commission.
Most recently completed a writer’s attachment for MOTHER AND SON Season 2 (Wooden Horse Productions). Mararo’s original television series Sharpened Knives is currently in development with Arenamedia.
