Mark Rogers is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter who lives on Dharawal land. Known for innovative storytelling that plays with form, Mark’s writing explores difficult human moments with pathos and levity. His body of work is defined by his unique vision and deep love of collaboration.
Mark’s play SUPERHEROES was awarded both the Sydney Theatre Company Patrick White Award and the Griffin Award in 2019 – the only play to have won both awards in the same year. Internationally, the play was shortlisted for Stückemarkt as part of the Berlin Festspiele. It went on to have its premiere season at Griffin Theatre in 2020, directed by Shari Sebbens.
His follow-up play NAKED & SCREAMING was presented at La Boite Theatre in Brisbane and directed by Sanja Simić. It was nominated for six Matilda Awards in 2022, winning three: Best Production, Best Director and Best Female Actor in a Leading Role.
Mark’s work with director and co-writer Aaron Lucas, LUNA & THE BRAIN TUNA, was awarded Screen NSW’s Short-to-Feature Fast Track. The short film premiered at SXSW Sydney and screened at Adelaide Film Festival, Aspen Shortsfest, Aesthetica and Downunder Filmfestival (Berlin, Copenhagen). Their feature length script LUNA, a magic realist exploration of illness through the eyes of an 8-year-old, is in development with Closer Productions and Cosmic Scream.
Mark is also a core member of re:group – one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed independent theatre companies. Their production POV premiered at Belvoir’s 25A and was nominated for Best New Australian Work at the Sydney Theatre awards. Emotionally powerful and imaginative in form, the show features a child performer working with two new unrehearsed adult actors each night of the season. It was subsequently presented at RISING Festival, National Theatre of Parramatta and New Annual Festival in Newcastle.
After premiering at the Sydney Opera House in 2024, Mark’s indie musical with re:group, AUTO-TUNE, won Best Theatre and the RISING Headroom award at Melbourne Fringe in 2025.
Both POV and AUTO-TUNE will tour nationally in 2026.
