Michael Wilkinson is a costume designer who works internationally. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the Costume Designers Guild of America (CDG). He has a degree in Design from the National Institute of the Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Australia. Variety magazine recently included Wilkinson in their “Below the Line Impact” list of film-makers that have significant impact in their field of expertise.
Michael has been nominated for, and has won, numerous awards for his work, including Oscar and BAFTA nominations, an Emmy win, multiple Costume Designers Guild Award nominations and wins, a Critics Choice Award nomination, and wins for the Hollywood Film Festival and the Saturn Awards.
Michael’s film and TV costume design work includes ANDOR Season 1 & 2, a streaming series for Disney set in the Star Wars universe, AMERICAN HUSTLE, a bold 1970s caper staring Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Christian Bale; ALADDIN, the film musical for Disney starring Will Smith; 3 BODY PROBLEM , the mind-bending series by David Benioff and DB Weiss, creators of GAME OF THRONES; THE GENTLEMEN, a stylish British heist movie from Guy Ritchie, JINGLE JANGLE, an Afro-Victorian musical; SEBERG, featuring Kristen Stewart as the 60s style icon Jean Seberg; and JUSTICE LEAGUE, BATMAN V SUPERMAN and MAN OF STEEL, including Michael’s superhero designs for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Aquaman.
Michael has also designed the period films DEATH BY LIGHTNING and THE CURRENT WAR, with Michael Shannon and Benedict Cumberbatch respectively; the post-apocalyptic NOAH, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe; Zack Snyder’s visionary epic “300”; Joe Kosinski’s futuristic TRON: LEGACY, starring Jeff Bridges; the action thriller WATCHMEN; Alejandro Inarritu’s international ensemble drama BABEL; the American Civil War drama JONAH HEX with Josh Brolin and Michael Fassbender; TERMINATOR SALVATION starring Christian Bale; and the cult hits GARDEN STATE, AMERICAN SPLENDOR and PARTY MONSTER.
Upcoming costume design work include THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL for Netflix, a six episode drama by Peter Morgan, creator of the series THE CROWN.
Michael’s theater work includes award-winning costume designs for the Sydney Theater Company, Opera Australia, The Australian Dance Theater and Radio City Hall. Michael also designs commercials, and works in Special Event design – he created hundreds of costumes for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC GAMES.
